Friedrich Preller the Elder (1804-1878) had an illustrious career during the era of German Romanticism.  He studied at the drawing school in Weimar.  The artist apparently displayed considerable talent as he was awarded scholarships during the years 1824-1826.

While Preller was in Rome, he joined the circle of Nazarenes. Later he returned to Weimar where he worked on a series of frescoes.  From 1835 through 1841, Preller taught at the drawing school in Weimar, but there was much travel as well as the artist received numerous commissions both in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.  Towards the end of his life, Friedrich Preller the Elder was the director of the drawing school in Weimar.
