Alfred Broge (1870-1955) is best known for his landscapes.  These paintings were so popular in the 1930s that the images were widely reproduced in posters and postcards.

Most of these paintings depict Scandinavian landscapes, but the artist also traveled through and painted in Germany, France, Spain, and Italy during the 20s.

Broge studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen between 1889 and 1891.

Broge’s first exhibition was in Charlottenborg in 1892; he was a young man at that point, but his talent was clear to anyone with an eye for art.  Many exhibitions followed, especially throughout the 20s.  By the 30s, the political climate was unfavorable and events were leading inexorably to what would become World War II.

Alfred Broge’s paintings have sold for as much as $20,000 at auction.
