Spring '62 II
Oil on canvas, 1962
Signed lower right
40 x 49 inches
Provenance: Kovler Gallery
I consider this painting to be a masterpiece by Peterdi. The only painting I have ever seen that compares to it is his painting Mari’s Garden II. The latter painting is very similar in style but was done two years later in 1964. The earlier date is more desirable as it corresponds to what some people consider to be the final year of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
Mari’s Garden II is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art; it is also pictured on the cover of the book Gabor Peterdi: Paintings by Burt Chernow.
The colors in the first two images depicting the entire painting are unfortunately lighter than the actual painting. This is due to the light reflecting off the surface of the painting. The close-up images are more accurate in terms of capturing the true colors of the painting.
